In just a few hours Apple will be announcing several new products. Along with this widely anticipated event are endless rumors circulating on the interwebs as to what Apple will be announcing, however the big rumor is that Apple will be announcing the long anticipated iPhone 5.
Along with this rumor come some amazing predictions about how successful the iPhone 5 will be, including: “Apple could sell as many as 10 million iPhones by the end of September alone.” Source
Before we get all caught up in the hype of iPhone 5, I think it would be helpful if we paused for a moment to catch our breath and calm down. Otherwise we might be swept away with the hysteria and end up purchasing a product we really do not need. Consider these verses…
But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV
While I am not a prophet, I am 100% certain that Apple’s big event today will not include a plea for you to be content. In fact the entire event is designed to be exactly the opposite! The event is designed to make you discontent with whatever phone you are currently using. If Apple can make you feel discontent they will then be able to “fix” this perceived problem by selling you the latest and greatest. Don’t believe the hype!
In the above quoted verses we are told that godliness + contentment = great gain. What should we be content with? According to verse 8 if we have food and clothing then we have enough to be content! Amazing. Radical. Extreme.
The vast majority of people who will read this blog post have SO much more than simply the bare necessities. So, instead of getting all caught up in the hype– we should take a moment to remember how blessed we are with what we already have. After all, when today’s big product announcement is over the iPhone 6 rumors will begin!
